This past spring I had the opportunity to travel to California and paint a residential mural. The home was located in Del Mar, a small ocean front town that rubs shoulders with San Diego. The owners are avid art collectors, their home an exhibition of paintings, photographs, and sculptures.
With a pre-mediated color palette and 4 days on site, I worked quickly to create an ocean inspired mural. The wall for the mural hosts a dining room table, and the piece would act as the main focus of the space. As I worked I had views of both the Pacific Ocean and the mountains opposite.
My biggest challenge with the piece was working on a colored surface. The background of the mural was a pale, creamy yellow, instead of the usual white I use for negative space. Outside of my comfort zone, I embraced the warmth of the background and used to it enhance the feeling of the famous California sun.
Thank you so much to my fantastic clients for allowing me to be a part of your home - and for a delicious and unforgettable taste of California. Art continues to inspire me in the ways it brings people together while solidifying thoughts, emotions, and experiences in time.
